2G Alarm Upgrade

Your alarm system’s cellular connection may need an upgrade. If your security system still uses a wireless 2G cellular data connection to send a signal to our alarm monitoring center, it’s time for an alarm connection upgrade to 3G technology.

What is the 2G sunset and why is an upgrade of your 2G connection necessary?

2G is short for second-generation wireless telephone technology. Several years ago, AT&T shared that it would stop using its 2G wireless network incrementally by the end of 2016 because of the growing increase in smartphone and overall data use. By shutting down the older 2G network (the 2G sunset) AT&T has shared that users will benefit from higher capacity and a faster connection, using its 4G cellular connection networks.

2G Technology and Your Alarm System

These days, most alarm monitoring is over a cellular connection, and originally, many wireless alarm systems were installed with a 2G compatible GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) device. With the elimination of the 2G network, systems relying on the 2G connection will not be able to communicate signals to alarm monitoring centers and alarm dispatchers. Systems that use the 2G technology need to be upgraded immediately.
